2010 Decorative Project of the Year: Call for Entries

Honoring the decorative niche of the concrete industry.

Decorative concrete is becoming more important in the competitive world of concrete construction. To recognize the concrete community's innovative contributions to decorative concrete, the editors of CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION created this award program to recognize true artists in this field. We will honor the country's best projects, with one project as the overall Decorative Concrete Project of the Year.

Read answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the awards.

Eligibility

A decorative concrete contractor or decorative concrete materials supplier may submit projects completed between November 1, 2009 and July 1, 2010. Hanley Wood employees, their relatives, and regular contributors to the magazine are not eligible.

Does my project have to contain decorative concrete?
Yes. Projects must use a significant amount of decorative concrete or concrete products that are used in an artistic fashion and demonstrate decorative concrete techniques in some way.

Can I enter a project that has won other awards or been previously published?
No.

Do you accept entries from outside the United States?
Yes. Entries from outside the U.S. are welcome.

How many projects can one contractor submit?
Each contractor or company may submit up to three projects. Each project must be submitted separately, with its own entry form and supporting documentation.

Categories

Your Decorative Concrete project can fall within any of eight different categories, or a combination of categories:

  • Stamping
  • Staining
  • Exposed Aggregate
  • Colored Pavement
  • Vertical
  • Coatings
  • Countertops
  • Other

How to enter

There is no entry fee for the Decorative Concrete Project of the Year. Entry packages must be received by August 27, 2010, including the following components:

  • Completed entry form. Please fill out all of the information on this form.
  • A written description of the project—no more than 500 words, no less than 25 words—describing the materials and techniques used, duration of the project, crew size, special circumstances, and other unique elements of the project.
  • A minimum of 5 photos showing the best aspects of the completed project must be submitted with the entry form. Photo quality should be 4x6, 300 dots per inch (dpi). No more than 20 pictures per project. NOTE: By submitting photos, you agree to give CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION the right to use the photos in all contest publicity, including, but not limited to, articles, promotional materials, and Web site features.

Projects lacking any of the required elements will be disqualified.

Where do I send my entry packet?
Packets can be e-mailed to Colette Palait, faxed to 773-824-2401, or mailed to

Entry Requirements

Are entry forms available online?
Yes. Download the entry instructions and form.

What should I do if I'm not sure which category best fits my entry?
Enter your project in the categories you feel most appropriate. If the judges feel it belongs in different categories, they will switch it to that category during judging. Your entry will not be penalized.

Can the project description exceed 500 words?
Descriptions longer than 500 words will not be penalized but entrants are encouraged to keep statements as succinct as possible and focus on the decorative techniques used on the entry.

What should I do if my photographer is uncomfortable with releasing images?
Photographers are welcome to clarify the language or provide their own release. Images of winning projects will only used in conjunction with the design awards, and will be published in CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION magazine, and posted on our Web site. They will not be used outside of the awards without the photographer's express permission.

Can I submit my project without the photo release form?
Project entries should include all completed forms as required. If there is a delay with the photo release form, you may submit your project and then fax, mail, or e-mail that form separately, when completed. Please indicate that a photo release form is being submitted separately on your project form. Your entry will not be penalized if the photo release form arrives after the project deadline date.

When is the deadline for submitting projects?
The entry deadline is August 27, 2010.

Photo requirements

How many photos should I include with my entry?
A minimum of five photos should be submitted of the project. No more than 20 photos should be supplied. Photos must show at least one overall view of the project, one shot taken during construction (if available), and one of the completed project.

Can I send digital photos instead of prints?
Digital photos must be high resolution (300 dpi). They can be sent on CD, e-mailed, or posted to Hanley Wood's FTP site. For FTP information, contact Colette Palait at 773-824-2506.

Can I submit color copies instead of prints?
We prefer digital photos. However, if you are sending prints, remember these photographs are the jury's means for evaluating each entry, so color copies must be clear images that accurately convey a project's important architectural features.

Can I use photographs I took myself?
Yes, if they are professional-quality photographs that can be reproduced for publication.

Should I send drawings, floor plans, or renderings?
Drawings are optional. You can include up to four drawings (maximum size 8.5x14 inches) showing interesting design details. These also must be included with the other entry materials.

Selection of winners

CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION will select one winner in each category and one overall Decorative Concrete Project of the Year.
