Landmark Sustainable Laboratory

McCarthy has completed construction for the new 45,000-sq-ft, three-story J. Craig Venter Institute, La Jolla, located on the University of California, San Diego, campus.

The net-zero-energy facility represents the most ambitious sustainably designed biological research laboratory project ever to be built and will support JCVI's quest to perform the science needed to solve critical environmental and human health challenges.

The landmark building has been built to earn LEED Platinum Certification.

The building has exposed architectural concrete panels, Spanish cedar wood siding, a wood-framed window curtain wall and storefront system, metal panels, and an expansive photovoltaic array.

The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is the new home for scientists working to advance genomics.

The project team used BIM, Navis Works, and Blue Beam for the electronic plan room to keep project costs in check.
