Pepperdine University, Malibu, Calif.

In 2009, Pepperdine University students returning to the Malibu campus for fall classes found new classroom digs as well as an elegant and peaceful plaza and outdoor community space.

The project created six distinctive outdoor locations to provide a beautiful, functional place for events and gatherings.

The picturesque plaza offers inviting niches to sit, read, relax, study, and socialize.

One of the university’s goals was to integrate social and academic venues, so that they would converge on the main plaza at the heart of campus.

The Trademark crew incorporated a rectilinear random sawcut design.

Each panel was colored with a unique blend of stain to yield a varied, yet homogenous stained concrete plaza.

Stained, but not sealed.

Cast-in-place walls and steps were washed to yield a sand texture, and then stained.

The tooled warning strip at the stairs received a darker, contrasting stain to meet code requirements.

The renovated areas of Joslyn Plaza include an up-lighted cross tower and garden, shade structures, landscaping, water features, lighting, an outdoor sound system, and strategically located utility connections for outdoor events.
