The heat was on Thor, literally and figuratively, from day one to put in place the massive, towering concrete columns that provide the core structural support for the arena decking, siding, and roof. “The project timetable called for us to complete the core column work in about a month’s time,” says Ryan White, vice president of construction for Thor.

Thor implemented an accelerated work schedule to achieve the initial stages of the project, including double-pumping the concrete for the column pours, says Justin Golubich, Thor project manager. Much of the concrete pouring activity took place in the early morning hours when temperatures were at their coolest and to accommodate traffic flows on nearby Las Vegas Boulevard

Part of the project called for a large ramp that leads up to the arena. The new arena will host college basketball games and an array of high-profile concerts.

Thor was awarded the contract for the arena’s concrete build-out in August, 2014, with the understanding that the arena owners planned to inaugurate the facility with a series of big-name entertainment acts in early April 2016.

Located between Frank Sinatra Drive and Rue de Monte Carlo, just off of Las Vegas Boulevard, the arena connects physically to the adjacent New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos. It also features a Las Vegas-sized outdoor video screen, measuring 200 feet wide by 45 feet high.
