Welsh researchers at Cardiff University have developed a system using microbes embedded in concrete that spark into life once water enters a crack. The water triggers the microbes to produce limestone deposits plugging the crack before water, chlorides, and oxygen can corrode steel reinforcement. At the same time microcapsules filled with an epoxy resin dissolve when exposed to water to bond the cracks together. Presenting this concept, Professor Diane Gardner won the You Heard It Here First event at the British Science Festival. For more, visit here.
