Flatwork finishers will often spray evaporation retarder (or water) onto the surface of a slab to extend the finishing time. Research conducted before and during the 2013 World of Concrete has shown that a power troweling aid from Lythic Solutions called Day 1 can extend set time by as much as 45 minutes without weakening the surface like water can. Students at Middle Tennessee State University’s Concrete Industry Management program (plus WOC attendees) have conducted the research. This material is a colloidal silica that appears to also serve as a curing agent, retaining water in the concrete. Watch for more coverage of this troweling aid as research continues.
