For the concrete contractor, vibratory screeds provide many benefits -- perhaps the most important being the elimination of labor-intensive manual strike-off of concrete with a conventional straightedge. The screeds also level and consolidate the concrete slab simultaneously, allowing workers to quickly produce smooth, flat surfaces that are ready for subsequent finishing operations.

Truss or A-frame screeds are the most common type used where screed stiffness and weight are important. The seven screeds profiled in this article come in 2 1/2- to 10-foot sections that interlock and allow for variable lengths. Most units also feature a turnbuckle system that adjusts the frame to accommodate various crowns, valleys and slopes.
