When I first became senior editor for Concrete Construction, I was introduced by telephone to Bill Shorey; sales director for Spec West, a construction supply house in the Sacramento, Calif. area. I met him a couple years later at the World of Concrete and over the past seven years we have talked occasionally about industry happenings and about contractors he knew who were doing creative decorative work. He was passionate about decorative concrete and was a frequent contributor to a popular decorative concrete Web site, signing off as the “colorman.” When he wrote me e-mails, he always ended with “your friend in concrete.” At the World of Concrete each year, he organized the Decorative Concrete Hospitality Night, which manufacturers sponsored and several hundred decorative concrete contractors attended. There was hardly standing room at most of them.
Bill died too young on Jan. 9th after battling cancer, leaving behind many “friends in concrete” across the U.S. I was one of them and will miss him.
