Winget decided to construct a dead, decaying, desert Ironwood tree. In order to prepare, he studied and photographed trees in the desert. The first step involved building an armature by welding 4-inch pipe, then 3-, 2-, and 1-inch pipe together, finishing with ½-inch rebar at the ends of the branches. Rust-proofing was the next step followed by wrapping the armature with plastic lath to create shape. He then applied a structure coat, scratching it to provide good bond for the final texture coat application. After completing the carving, he colored his work using water-based stains.
