Ten years before Dustin Hoffman's character in “The Graduate” was advised to pursue a career in plastics, Concrete Construction reported on “a new family of man-made materials called polyethylene films ... a member of that exceedingly confusing family of materials called plastics.” The January 1957 article proclaimed “new applications are coming to light at a rapid rate” and offered a partial list: vapor barrier, membrane curing material, tilt-up bond-breaker, form liner, flashing material, and protective enclosure and covering.
