This project came to life when the owner expressed his disappointment of not being able to put down real hardwood flooring in his mancave, a den-like oasis complete with fireplace, wet bar, and comfortable seating—after installing radiant heat in his concrete floors. Artistic Concrete Coatings suggested using products that simulate hardwood flooring.

Designer's Perspective

The owner of this project was in a fix until he met us with our wrapped trailer at a local gas station in March of 2010. He explained that he installed radiant heat in his concrete floors and now couldn't put down the real hardwood flooring he wanted to complete his Man Cave. I told him he was in luck because with The Concrete Protector products I could simulate any style of hardwood flooring he would want. So my four crew members and myself went to work. We first used a 24" diamond grinder to prepare the surface. After vacuuming and masking the surrounding area we applied a layer of The Concrete Protector black modified acrylic concrete. We then taped out the wood planks and sprayed a light tan layer of modified acrylic concrete. While the material was still wet we used a small kitchen broom to drag across the surface to simulate a wood grain texture. We then used small 2 inch chip brushes to make the knot holes. After it dried we pulled all tape and vacuumed and drilled 3/8 inch nail holes at the end of each plank. Then for 8 hours two of us hand stained each board to achieve a more natural look.

Finally on the 4th and 5th day we applied 2 coats of The Concrete Protector UV resistant epoxy and then a coat of the Protectothane 1000 for chemical and abrasion resistance.

Months later the owner told me, after spending nearly half a million dollars on The Ultimate Man Cave he receives more complements on the floor and people just wont stop talking about it. It cost him less than 2% of his budget!
