Mesa College’s Student Services Center brings together 16 different departments into one shared space for students’ daily activities. The building also connects to the upper and lower campus.
The building’s interior design utilizes the exterior concrete found in the courtyard. The exterior was done in Lithocrete, while the interior was done in polished concrete using seeded aggregate as well as HD flooring. The concrete was polished and ground (HD) by having a 90% seeded green aggregate with sizes 3/4 to 1 inch, with alternating black polished bands.
The height difference between the two bands necessitated a unique method. T.B. Penick & Sons Inc. had to first grind the large aggregate before pouring the polished black bands. The challenge of this project was working with and around other contractors during final grinding and polishing while still protecting the work.
