A terraced dining patio adjoining the Kula Lodge on the Hawaiian island of Maui required special seating arrangements to take advantage of the spectacular view of both sides of the island. I convinced the owner that custom lightweight concrete furniture could satisfy these special requirements. The major concern was whether or not concrete would be comfortable. I proposed that it could be if molded into the proper contours. My primary considerations for furniture design were weather exposure, maintenance, permanency, and comfort. The benches have been in place since 1992. The favorable comments from restaurant patrons who use them have confirmed my conviction that concrete furniture can be durable as well as comfortable.
