When Keystone Resort planned to expand its gondola system on a Colorado ski slope, the owners, with the help of two engineering firms, decided to build an entire complex and bury it under the ski run near the already existing ski terminal. The structure would house a new gondola terminal, storage for the gondolas, a washroom, a paint bay, an electrical equipment room and a maintenance facility. This would be the first gondola facility under a ski run at an altitude of more than 11,600 feet. The project won an engineering excellence award from the Consulting Engineers Council of Colorado and a design excellence award from the American Concrete Institute of Colorado.
