Originally constructed in 1941 and completed in 1950, the Wolf Creek Dam in southern Kentucky began leaking near its base in 1968. After repairs that included a concrete barrier wall, the dam held its own until 2005 when leaking again forced the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to embark on a massive repair effort. A second 4200-foot concrete barrier wall made of 350,000 cubic yards of concrete is being constructed in 10-foot sections, and will extend nearly a mile across the earthen part of the dam. The new barrier wall, made of high-slump, 2000 psi-compressive strength concrete, is the primary element of the project. It involves a combination of secant piles and rectangular panels installed through the foundation rock to a depth of 275 feet to cut off seepage through the underlying limestone. The concrete wall will extend eastward along the upstream embankment from the concrete section to the right abutment.
