Many of the nation’s bridges lack adequate load ratings, and for older bridges, construction drawings are often missing or incomplete. Recent advances in nondestructive testing allow us to develop an image of the internal construction of concrete bridge members to determine the dimensions and the location of internal reinforcement. Ground penetrating radar (GPR), in particular, has become a powerful aid in developing as-built drawings for existing bridges.
