Chapter officers representing ten Latin American countries gathered in Cusco, Peru, on Monday, November 20, 2017, for a Chapter Roundtable meeting focused on increasing student membership and developing regional concrete competitions.

The roundtable was held in conjunction with a Concrete Ball Competition and the XII Convencin Internacional organized by Peru ACI Chapter.

The Concrete Ball Competition was held on Monday morning in the civil engineering lab at Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad del Cusco. Eleven teams and approximately sixty students from the cities of Cusco, Lima, Trujillo, Huaraz, and Apurimac participated in the event. Unlike the traditional concrete bowling ball event hosted by ACI, the Peru students created a concrete fútbol with a scoring field and goalpost, representative of the region’s most popular sport, football better known as soccer in the USA.

Winners of the Concrete Ball Competition were:

1st Place – Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola – Lima (UNSIL) - $1,000

2nd Place – Universidad San Antonio de Abad de Cusco (UNSAAC) - $750

3rd Place – Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas – Lima (UPC) - $500

In addition to the prize money awarded by the Peru chapter, ACI presented a check for $5,000 to the first-place winners to fund their travel to the ACI Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Bowling Ball Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA on March 25, 2018.

Following the student competition, the Chapter Roundtable was hosted at the JW Marriott in Cusco. Presenters for the roundtable included John Conn, Director of Chapter Activities; Bill Rushing, ACI Past President and Chair of the Chapter Activities Committee (CAC); Kanette Worlds, Student, Faculty, & Young Professional Activities Coordinator; and Karla Kruse, Chair of the Student & Young Professional Activities Committee (SYPAC).

The XIII Convención Internacional event took place at the Cusco Convention Center on November 21-22. Speakers included ACI Board Directors, Bill Rushing and Antonio Nanni, and ACI Fellow Gustavo Tumialan.
