“I’ve always been a big fan of leading by example,” says Stevie Ray Lloyd, “and that means getting in the trenches and working as a team to get the job done and get it done right.” And he’s had plenty of opportunities to get down in the trenches.

After a successful football career at Virginia Tech, where he played in the Sugar Bowl and had opportunities at the pro level, Lloyd decided to join the family business. “I went to my dad and said let’s talk money. He said ‘I’m starting you at 10 bucks an hour and you can work for your little brother.’ But, I told him, ‘Daddy I have a college degree.’ He said, ‘Son, that’s not a trowel.’ So that’s how it all began.”

Growing up in a close family dedicated to concrete was good preparation for being an athlete and vice versa. “Coming from a concrete family and being an athlete kind of go together. Things like communication and discipline, and working together as a team, and never giving up. All that was driven into my head; success always comes from working hard, it’s just a way of life for me.”

With that background, as one would expect, there are no compromises on quality. “The jobs today are run at a higher pace, schedule-driven. But I told my dad it if it ever comes to the point where I’m sacrificing our quality, I’ll shut the doors. Quality is the reputation we’ve built for 40 years and that’s not going to change as long as I’m here.”
