Fifty years from now the material that will be called concrete will be very different from what we have today. Designing materials at the molecular level using very powerful computational and visualization tools will lead to breakthroughs in concrete as well as other materials.

We see the beginnings of this today. Nanotechnology is allowing scientists and engineers to analyze how and why materials behave as they do. This knowledge will permit custom designs at the molecular level that will result in amazing properties at full scale. The mixing and production technology may be similar to current practice, but the product will be quite different.
