Contractors face many challenges from financial to technical to human resources, but you don’t have to do it alone. Join a group like the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) or your local ACI, ABC, or ASA chapter and participate—actually taking an active role is the key. You’ll get a lot more out of it if you put some of yourself into it.

And if you are a leader in your company, or want to become a leader, consider attending the ASCC Concrete Executive Leadership Forum in July. I’ve been involved with this event for many years and there is nothing else like it in the concrete industry for making close business friends. The Leadership Forum is always staged in a luxury venue where everyone can relax for a few days and open up about the trials and tribulations of running a construction company and share solutions. It’s an intimate event but not exclusive.

The 2019 CELF will be held July 18 to 21 in Key Largo, Florida at the beautiful Ocean Reef Club. Look, this place is indeed a high-end hotel, but it is an opportunity to rub shoulders with the leaders of the concrete construction industry and that is nearly priceless. In all these years I’ve never had a contractor tell me it was a waste of time and money. On the other hand, I’ve had many tell me it was the most valuable event they ever attended and that they formed lifelong friendships both business and personal. I’ve known entire families that attend the CELF every year and even seen some of the children end up attending as young leaders.

The program at the CELF is always geared towards business and management. This year’s program includes a talk by Brandon Emmons who handles workforce development at Structural Technologies. You can read a bit about what he will cover in this article. Other presentations will discuss safety culture and learning to work with Gen x, Millennials, and Gen Z.

And then there’s the golf. Sorry, I’m not a golfer, but if you are then attending the CELF has always been an opportunity to play at some of America’s greatest courses. In Florida, The Hammock Course at Ocean Reef looks beautiful in the photos and I’m sure will be much better in real life.
