3M’s $2.5 billion acquisition of Capital Safety Projects last week turned more than a few heads in both the safety and office supply industry. While the price tag got most of the attention, safety professionals see it as an indicator of the growing trend towards increased focus on workplace safety.
Capital Safety Products is a leading global provider of fall protection equipment, one of the fastest-growing safety categories within the global personal protective equipment industry. Capital Safety’s industry-leading products and solutions include harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines and engineered systems sold under well-known global brands DBI-SALA and PROTECTA.

3M’s Personal Safety business, part of 3M’s Safety and Graphics Business Group, is a global provider of respiratory and hearing protection solutions that help improve the safety and security of workers. The business also supplies products and solutions in other safety categories such as reflective materials for high-visibility apparel, protective clothing and eyewear, among others.
“Personal safety is a large and strategically important growth business in the 3M portfolio,” said Inge G. Thulin, 3M chairman, president and chief executive officer. “The acquisition of Capital Safety bolsters our personal safety platform and will build on our fundamental strengths in technology, manufacturing, global capabilities and brand.”
Apollo Safety’s offerings include a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems suitable for large universities, including name brands like Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems, RKI, and GMI. These systems are available for purchase or rental at weekly or monthly rates. Rental equipment is certified to NIST standards and is guaranteed for the entire rental period.
Apollo Safety also provides on-site installation and training along with and 24/7 service. All technicians are factory-trained and certified. In addition, Apollo offers its own training program, with five levels of certification.
