Larry Stevens played a big role in shaping the future of the public works profession. In addition to his successful career as a public works leader, Stevens also mentors young public works professionals through the Iowa Chapter of APWA.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from South Dakota State University, Stevens went on to have a distinguished career in municipal engineering. With more than 40 years of professional experience, he has served in numerous leadership roles, including president of APWA from 2014-15.

His professional experience includes serving as the Director of the Iowa Statewide Urban Design and Specifications program at Iowa State University from 2003-09, 22 years as City Engineer and Public Works Director for Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Assistant City Engineer for the City of Grinnell, Iowa, for five years.

Stevens has been able to deal with unpleasant people in a manner that does not lead to escalation.

"The key to not incite people to be violent is to treat all with respect and don't be argumentative. Respect people's different opinions," says Stevens.
