The 466-mile Pacific Northwest Corridor is one of 11 federally designated high-speed rail corridors in the U.S. Point Defiance Bypass, the project that made national headlines when its inaugural run derailed on Dec. 18, is one of 20 capital projects the Washington State DOT Rail Office plans to speed getting from Seattle to Portland, Ore. Because the project was federally funded, the project had to be completed by the end of 2017.
