The innovative Golden 1 Center, home to the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, has a new title of its own, winning first place in the Sustainable Building category of the 2017 International Edition of the CEMEX Building Award at a ceremony Thursday in Mexico City.
Urata & Sons Concrete accepted the award for their work on the state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue after topping 12 other sustainable-building finalists from around the world.
The $477 million arena, one of the largest construction projects in Sacramento in the last decade, was completed in late 2016, and required large, strictly-timed pours to meet its specifications. The stadium seats 19,000 people, and it is an interactive, smart and frictionless building that utilizes enhanced Wi-Fi architecture and sensors to ensure connectivity.

A second project in the United States, the Sufism Reoriented Sanctuary in Walnut Creek, Calif., was named a finalist in this year’s competition in the Building category.
The CEMEX Building Award recognizes the best in architecture and construction worldwide each year and over its 26-year history has developed into the benchmark for best practices in international construction. This year, a total of 61 finalists from 17 countries were recognized at the award ceremony.
