The staff and board of directors for the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) announced today they are accepting submissions for the 2019 PCI Design Awards. The program is PCI’s annual showcase of projects demonstrating design excellence and construction quality using precast/prestressed concrete.

According to PCI President and CEO Bob Risser, the program, which is now in its 56th year, has helped the design and construction community innovate and advance by showcasing ideas that push the envelope, overcome challenges, and improve existing concepts.

“The program demonstrates how designers are continuing to utilize precast and/or prestressed concrete systems to create sustainable, cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing, and quickly-constructed projects,” Risser said.

All winning projects will be showcased at the PCI Convention, which will take place Feb. 26 to March 2, 2019, in Louisville, Kentucky, in addition to being published in the PCI Journal, Ascent, and Aspire magazines.

To be eligible, precast concrete must have been produced by a PCI- or CPCI-certified precast concrete producer if the project is located in the United States or Canada. Projects must have been completed within the last three years (for 2019 entries, no earlier than January 1, 2015).

Projects are entered in one of two main categories: buildings and transportation. The buildings category has several subcategories, including office, retail, mixed use, K-12 schools, university, government, religious, health care/medical, warehouse/distribution, manufacturing, hotels/motels, residential, and more. The transportation category also includes several subcategories: main span bridges up to 75 feet, from 76 to 149 feet, and more than 150 feet; rehabilitated bridges; non-highway bridges; special solution; and international transportation.

There also are four special awards: the Harry H. Edwards Industry Achievement Award, All-Precast Concrete Solution Award, Sustainable Design Award, and the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Award (only for building submissions). Independent juries of industry experts will judge the entries. They will consider creativity and ingenuity in using precast to achieve aesthetic expression, function, economy, and sustainability. Separate juries evaluate buildings, transportation, and special awards.

“The PCI Design Awards program has become a nationally-recognized showcase of some of the best-of-the-best projects in concrete construction,” said Mason Lampton, PCI Board Chairman and President, Standard Concrete Products. “We relish this time of year because the diverse range of entries we receive gives us and our peers such a great lens into the many ways our industry continues to push the envelope. We hope this is another record-breaking year for designers submitting projects.”
