During 2013-14, we have seen the exit of many executives who have dedicated their careers to the concrete industry. Their departures could mean significant changes on a global level.


Alessandro Buzzi

Alessandro Buzzi of Buzzi Unicem (Casale Monferrato, Italy) ended his 11-year tenure as chairman in early 2014, asking the board of directors to choose his brother, Enrico Buzzi, as his successor. “If this is the case,” he said, “my father Luigi’s statement on the company’s 75th anniversary in 1982 will be proven true once again: ‘this company was created by and will always be run by brothers, whose common spirit will provide the spirit and the vision for the future.”

Myles Lee

Myles Lee, group chief executive of CRH (Dublin, Ireland) retired at the end of 2013, completing his five-year term as chief executive and 10 years as an executive director. Lee joined CRH, parent company of Oldcastle, in 1982 and became finance director in 2003. Albert Manifold, CRH board member and chief operating officer since 2009, is the group’s new chief executive.

Jacques Merceron-Vicat

Jacques Merceron-Vicat, chairman of the group for Vicat Group (Paris) resigned his position as of the 2014 annual general meeting in May 2014. Merceron-Vicat was chairman for 30 of his 50 years with the company. Guy Sidos, CEO, will now add the role of chairman to his responsibilities.

Robert Rogers

Robert Rogers, chairman of TXI (Dallas), died in June 2013 after more than 50 years with his father’s company. Rogers joined TXI in 1960 following two years of U.S. Navy service, earning a BA in economics from Yale University, and MBA from Harvard University. He served as CEO from 1970-2004, and chairman of the board for nine years afterward. TXI was acquired by Raleigh, N.C.-based Martin Marietta Inc. in June 2014.

Lorenzo Zambrano

Lorenzo Zambrano chairman and CEO for Cemex (Monterrey, Mexico), died May 12, 2014, at the age of 70. Zambrano led the company, founded by his grandfather, for 28 years as it expanded from a Mexican cement producer into a multinational construction materials provider. He is succeeded by former chief financial officer, Fernando Gonzalez Olivieri, as CEO and Rogelio Zambrano Lozano, director since 1987, as chairman.
