In 2016 the industry saw the implementation of at least three high-profile initiatives focused on future market expansion.
ACI began implementing recommendations from its strategic plan designed to better reach the industry and members around the world. The strategic renewal corresponded with the release of a fully redesigned Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete, ACI 318.
The American Society of Concrete Contractors, with the Strategic Development Council, began discussing what the concrete construction industry needs to do to prepare for the next decade. Concrete 2029 will become a road map for the industry to discuss how concrete construction will be conducted 13 years from now and what improvements will be necessary to achieve it.
NRMCA ramped up its promotional efforts on the benefits of concrete, especially in relation to local and national building codes. The Build with Strength program was launched to lobby against structural wood use in low- to mid-rise buildings. The effort reminds code officials and municipal leaders that concrete builds legacy communities and saves lives and property.
While these efforts increase concrete’s use in a sea of competing materials, other efforts enable rising tides. For 2016, we have identified three influencers whose activities will definitely impact your operations — workforce development, new market development, and process improvement.
