In this live, interactive work zone, experts from the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) and supporting associations will demonstrate how to construct safe rooms. Safe Room Showcase will present five examples of safe room construction including insulating concrete forms, concrete masonry units, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, and prefab steel on poured concrete footings.

In 2015 the FEMA will publish the 4th edition of the FEMA P-320, Taking Shelter from the Storm: Building a Safe Room for Your Home or Small Business. This important document has become the guide to how contractors should build these structures. As communities, owners, and zoning officials increasingly recognize the need for resilient structures, safe rooms will increase in number. Concrete and masonry contractors can benefit from this new awareness as concrete and masonry materials are the most common materials used in these structures. In fact, concrete is at the leading edge of sustainable construction.
