Operator Challenge
Do you pride yourself on your ability to operate construction equipment? Show off your skills by slaloming around cones, scoring a goal, or shooting a basket. This is the 15th year that John Deere is sponsoring this popular series of timed competitions.
Prizes are awarded daily to four people: one each for a backhoe, excavator, loader, and skidsteer. Bronze Lot (B50580).
For Decorative Contractors
Sponsored by Concrete Decor magazine and the Concrete Decor RoadShow, Decorative Concrete LIVE! features the Mall of Concrete. Portions of the walls and floors of a plaza with four buildings are unfinished to provide a canvas for demonstrating finishing techniques. Finished walls showcase trowel-applied coatings, stenciled and embossed patterns, and carved toppings; floors show broomed, carved, imprinted, saw cut, and stained concrete. Also, learn how to make walkways American with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant.

In 2017, the Concrete Surfaces and Decorative Pavilion concentrated on homes. This year, the space is twice as big and focuses on retail spaces.
Masonry Madness: One Day, Four Competitions
Sponsored by the Mason Contractors Association of America, from 9 a.m. to noon, first-, second-, and third-year apprentices who’ve won at the regional level build something from scratch without help or seeing the drawing beforehand. Sponsored by Spec Mix, from 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the tender who sets up his or her team’s Bricklayer 500 workstation first is crowned “Toughest Tender” (record: 11 mins., 7 secs; set in 2005 by Felipe Reyes of Connecticut). The four competitions provide more than $100,000 in cash and prizes including a new Ford F-250 truck.

Hosted by the Mason Contractors Association of America, Fastest Trowel on the Block gives journeyman masons and their favorite tender 20 minutes to build a 30-foot wall. Wed., Jan. 24; 11:30 a.m. to noon.
Sponsored by Spec Mix, Bricklayer 500 gives mason/tender teams an hour to build a 26-foot, 8-inch; double-wythe wall. Judges consider workmanship as well as brick count. Wed., Jan. 24; noon to 3 p.m.
