As President Obama attends a historic climate change summit in Paris this month, researchers in the concrete industry are also working on finding ways to reduce their carbon footprint. One potential solution is to use recycled aggregate in concrete.
Experiments across the globe are being conducted by scientists and researchers on the potential of using recycled concrete as a means of producing new concrete.
At the University of Lisbon, new, ambitious structures were created using recycled concrete. Results from the experiment showed that recycled concrete structures had the same capacity of conventional concrete structures.
Using recycled aggregates in future concrete projects "could minimize the ecological footprint of this industry, enabling reductions of the amount of landfill disposal, quarry mining, and fossil emissions due to transportation.”
