WOC 2010 Special Events

Artistry in Decorative Concrete

The Artistry in Decorative Concrete pushes the envelope of artistic expression. Hosted by Concrete Construction, watch leading artisans demonstrate the most innovative decorative concrete applications and techniques in integral color, stains, color hardeners, stamping, polishing, stenciling, overlays, sculpting, and more.

Concrete artists unveil the latest decorative techniques and applications on a 10x10-foot-square area throughout the week. This year, some of the artisans include Harry Gressette, Grescon Construction; Josh Hostetler, Heritage Concrete; and Troy Lemon, Cornerstone Decorative Concrete.

Additionally, the Artistry in Decorative Concrete includes Concrete Surfaces' Contractor Clinics covering various decorative topics. Sessions will take place throughout the week.

The retroreflectivity demonstration is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. Conducted by Rick Smith, vice president of operations and senior consultant, Structural Services Inc., the demo will be held immediately following his technical session WE33 Polishing Retail & Industrial Slabs?Design and Construction Best Practices, on Wed., Feb. 3 from 8 a.m.?11a.m. The moisture testing demonstration, held by Howard Kanare, senior principal scientist, CTLGroup, will be ongoing throughout the entire week, so be sure to stop by often.

New for this year are the Hand Tool Demos, scheduled to take place throughout the week within the Artistry in Decorative Concrete area. These interactive demonstrations include handheld polishing and grinding; engraving; drilling and coring; and wood forming.

"My Skills Are No Bull" Bosch Power Tool Challenge

Compete in this challenge, where contestants are tested on safety knowledge and tool usage that simulate tasks done by concrete contractors. Challenges include demolition, measuring, drilling, and fastening. Winners will be named every day. Register online today!

Concrete Construction's Field Test Breakfast

Concrete Construction and Scurto Cement Construction Ltd., currently are conducting a field test to learn more about shrinkage and curling in warehouse floors. A 60,000-square-foot warehouse floor in Bartlett, Ill., was cast into 5000- to 10,000-square-foot sections in February 2009, each receiving a different concrete mix design. Curling and movement are expected to vary among the mix designs, and each section is being profiled for the next two years to study curling. Using some of the latest technology to do the monitoring is also part of the story.
