Nothing dictates the performance of a concrete slab on ground so much as the soil support system. It must be well drained, dry at the time of concrete placement, and provide uniform support for the weight of the slab and anything placed on the slab. It should be separated from the slab by an impermeable vapor barrier.
Guides
The best guides for design and construction of a slab on ground are ACI 360 (design), ACI 302 (construction), and Portland Cement Association’s (PCA) Concrete Floors on Ground (EB075).
