It’s worth reminding ourselves that among polished concrete’s best attributes, its sustainable qualities cannot be overemphasized.
“It’s like shooting fish in a barrel,” said Sean Reilly, principal with Kerns Group Architects of Arlington, Va. “Polished concrete and sustainability—it just fits.” Reilly spoke at the International Concrete Polishing & Staining Conference last fall.
Christopher Tull, of CRT Concrete Consulting, Fishers, Ind., asked how many members of the audience were familiar with the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program to recognize new sustainable construction. When few raised their hands, he added, “If you’re not familiar with it, you need to be. I don’t know if LEED will last, but green building and sustainability will last. Polished concrete is a home run.”
“We look for materials we and our clients consider beautiful, and that are green and sustainable,” Reilly said.
