Martha VanGeem, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, FACI, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Standards Achievement Award by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The award was presented June 22, 2013, at the ASHRAE annual conference in Denver, Colo. The ASHRAE Standards Achievement Award recognizes significant and exceptional service in the area of standards leadership and technical contribution.

VanGeem was given the award because of her work on standard project committees as well as her advocacy work related to the adoption of ASHRAE standards, nationally and internationally. She regularly testifies in support of ASHRAE's position at International Code Council hearings, and her testimony is critical to ASHRAE's success due to her depth of technical knowledge.

VanGeem distinguishes herself as an active project committee member, having served six terms on ASHRAE Standard Committee 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings; five terms on ASHRAE Standard Committee 90.2, Energy Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings; and three terms on ASHRAE Standard Committee 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. She also chaired the Code Interaction Subcommittee of Standards Committee. ASHRAE is a building technical society of 54,000 professionals. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability.

Martha G. VanGeem, PE, LEED AP BD+C, FACI is a self-employed principal engineer in the Chicago area with 35 years of experience. She serves as a project principal investigator and specialized consultant in the areas of green buildings and infrastructure, energy use in buildings, energy codes, thermal mass, and moisture mitigation. Her accumulated experience during her career has included over 500 large and small consulting, testing, and research projects. Ms. VanGeem has investigated moisture problems and performed energy analyses and testing for numerous concrete, steel, and wood framed buildings.

Ms. VanGeem is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois, a LEED AP BD+C, a Registered Energy Professional (residential and commercial) for the city of Chicago, and a fellow of the American Concrete Institute.
