Associations join to fight ‘flushables’
The American Public Works Association is one of four organizations that will work with manufacturers of nonwoven fabric products to discourage consumers from flushing wet wipes and other “disposable” products down the toilet – a practice that’s clogging pumps and backing up sewers nationwide. The associations believe that rigorous product assessment before making a flushable claim, along with improved labeling, would significantly reduce the burden of increased maintenance, repair, and replacement by wastewater collection and treatment systems.
