Roundabouts Save Lives for 25 Years

The Maryland DOT State Highway Administration is celebrating the 25th anniversary of installing its first roundabout in the unincorporated community of Lisbon in Howard County. The number of crashes has fallen 77% since then.

MD 702 (Southeast Boulevard) receives high-speed traffic from I-695. Average daily traffic is 10,800. Fatal crashes have fallen 100% since a roundabout was built at Hyde Park Road.

MD 165 (Pylesville Road) connects a rural, but growing, area between Pennsylvania and Maryland. The speed limit is 50 mph. Since a roundabout connecting it with MD 24 (Rocks Road) opened in summer 2000, crashes fell 85% and there have been no fatalities.

Roundabouts Save Lives for 25 Years

About 5,000 vehicles use MD 16 (Church Creek Road), a secondary highway that runs 51 miles between the Delaware state line to Taylors Island, every day. Since a roundabout was installed at Woods Road in summer 2017, crashes have fallen 100% and there have been no fatalities.
