While customer demand is currently the biggest factor motivating precasters to adopt BIM, producers such as Coreslab are part of a growing group that recognize its benefits. “The ability to create 3D drawings is insufficient justification for implementing BIM,” says Roger Becker, managing director of research and development for the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. “A precast producer’s investment in BIM can only be justified by achieving process improvements that will become available with better data and data management.”

These improvements include:

  • reduced defects
  • minimization of data re-entry
  • cost tracking
  • quality tracking
  • piece tracking
  • electronic data for hardware fabrication, rebar fabrication, and batch plant operation
