It used to be that concrete was only specified by its strength. While strength is still important, a lot of concrete today is also specified for durability. The best way to specify durability is to base it on the concrete’s permeability. The rapid chloride permeability test (RCPT) has been the best way to measure permeability but this test has a lot of drawbacks (to learn more about the RCPT, visit here). A new testing device from Giatec, called the Surf, can determine the permeability quickly and accurately in the lab and soon even in the field. Visit www.giatecscientific.com.
