By using Rapid Set Waterproofing Mortar from CTS Cement, contractors can both simplify and speed the process of coating concrete and masonry substrates for long-lasting protection against moisture and bulk-water intrusion. Unlike conventional waterproofing products, the high-performance Waterproofing Mortar is a one-component product, which means it is easy to mix (just add water), apply and clean, and produces minimal product waste during the mixing process. This saves contractors and project owners time and money.
Durable in multiple environments, Waterproofing Mortar can be used to waterproof interior and exterior concrete, masonry and brick surfaces—both above and below grade. It is an ideal choice for basements and foundations as well as retaining walls, tilt-up concrete, cast-in-place concrete and precast concrete. Formulated for long life in critical applications, the product provides excellent adhesion to substrates over 200 psi (1.4 MPa) and is vapor-permeable, allowing structures to breathe to prevent moisture build-up.
The water-resistant and polymer-modified cement coating also sets fast (in three hours). After a two-coat application substrates can return to service, resisting hydrostatic pressures of up to 20 psi, within three days. It achieves a compressive strength of more than 2,500 psi (17.2 MPa) in 24 hours. In comparison, most competitive products on the market today require at least five to seven days after a one- to two-coat application before the substrate can handle hydrostatic pressures of up to 20 psi.
This fast-setting capability is a result of Waterproofing Mortar’s specialized blend of Rapid Set hydraulic cement, high-performance additives and quality aggregates. They key ingredient, Rapid Set Cement, is made with advanced rapid-hardening technology and can replace ordinary portland cement in time-critical projects requiring a fast return to service, high strength and increased durability. The hydraulic cement also is used to create customized concretes, mortars and grouts that achieve structural strength in one hour. Engineered for low shrinkage and superior resistance to chemical attack, the cement maximizes service life and minimizes maintenance.
An additional advantage of using Waterproofing Mortar is its ability to reduce a project’s carbon footprint and environmental impact, which can help contribute to LEED credits. Production of Rapid Set products emits far less carbon dioxide than portland cement.Waterproofing Mortar can be applied by trowel, masonry brush and even paint roller in temperatures ranging from 45° to 90° F (7° to 32° C). For best results, apply the product from the positive side of the substrate in thicknesses greater than 1/16 inch and up to 1/8 inch (0.16 to 0.32 cm). One 50-pound bag yields 110 square feet at 1/16-inch thickness (55 square feet if two coats are applied).
