Project Description
The limestone used on the Carmel High School Performing Arts Center is a major aesthetic component of the Architectural expression of this building.
Prairie style homes use broad sweeps of horizontal brick to emphasize their relationship to the land. The hearth is the heart of the home; and the chimney mass is the home's central anchor. This chimney has three hearths on the same level. Each faces a principal room. The living room fireplace is arched with hearth flush to the floor. The other two are raised and cantilevered over the floor. The two side hearths have inlaid mosaics. The chimney mass extends the entire height of the house -- from the floor of the basement to 5' above the roof. At the second level a 24" round barrel arch pierces the mass creating a surprisingly light focal point. All fireboxes are Rumford design.
