As you read this, I'm at Lightfair International, the world's largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference. I'm spending the day learning how an asset class virtually every public works department in the nation oversees -- streetlighting -- is becoming an increasingly hot property. Sensor manufacturers and software developers have a lot of money, which gives them a lot of clout; and they're working hard to convince elected officials they'll miss out on public safety improvements if they don't use lightpoles and fixtures to deploy "smart city" applications. (I'm not sure these companies understand how city departments collaborate to deliver basic services, but that's another story.)
In the meantime, as my colleague Elizabeth Donoff points out, LED technology continues to evolve. "Now into fifth- and sixth-generation products, manufacturers are integrating comprehensive lighting-control platforms that assist with a variety of functions, but especially color modulation." That may push communities that are considering upgrading from metal halide or low-pressure sodium into the making the not-insignificant investment.
Elizabeth and her colleague Selin Ashaboglu gathered the following new products in anticipation of Lightfair. There's stuff here that'll light up bridges, boardwalks, fountains, monuments, you name it. And I must say: Some of it is very cool.
