The first of its kind, the LeadSmart Lead Protection Plan includes on-site water testing for lead in drinking water, identifying sources of lead in a piping system and carrying out corrective actions that will bring a property’s drinking water into compliance with the U.S. EPA guideline for lead in drinking water.
According to the EPA, lead can cause serious health problems including damage to the brain and kidneys, and can interfere with the production of vital red blood cells. Infants, young children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the effects of lead exposure. “Beyond testing, the understanding of lead contributors in a building’s piping system and then carrying out the necessary corrective actions required to bring a property’s drinking water into compliance are much needed tools in helping fix the lead in the water crisis,” ACE DuraFlo CEO Larry Gillanders said. “The LeadSmart program is the first of its kind to bring together the critical components of: on-site water testing services for lead, identification of sources contributing to lead leaching into drinking water, provide a remedy and certification. Knowing your property’s drinking water is in compliance for lead not only brings peace of mind to a home owner, but the LeadSmart Certificate of Compliance is an excellent example of a disclosure tool that can be used by landlords and property sellers.”
A LeadSmart Certificate of Compliance is issued when the property’s drinking water is tested in compliance to current EPA guidelines for lead. LeadSmart water testing services are backed by an industry first, a $1 million Professional Errors and Omissions Insurance program.
Lead in drinking water is not just about lead pipes. Properties built before 1986 likely contain lead contributors, such as leaded solder used to join copper pipes and high lead content fixtures.
