The Water Research Foundation has awarded a $250,000 research grant to Vorhees, N.J.-based American Water Works Co. to publish a study: An Operational Definition in Drinking Water. American Water will also receive nearly $591,000 in in-kind contributions from approximately 20 utilities.
The research will examine practical indicators of distribution system biostability including: change in biodegradable organic matter; disinfectant demand and biodegradation of haloacetic acids; biofilm formation and corrosion rates; and biological consumption of ammonia, nitrate, and phosphate. American Water will collaborate with Dr. Patrick Evans, Vice President with CDM, a consulting, engineering, and construction firm based in Cambridge, Mass.
