Box blades are a handy tool for smoothing and contouring small land spaces. After developing an “intelligent” box blade, Caterpillar asked a contractor use the skidsteer attachment to prepare 2,400 square feet for a concrete pour. A job that would’ve taken almost two hours was completed in 36 minutes.

Available in 7- and 8-foot widths, the box blade is equipped with two technologies that improve grading accuracy and efficiency:

  • A Trimble Navigation Ltd. TDL 450 radio-based GPS unit, masts, and electrical harnessing so customers can automate the grading process using 2D or 3D surveying technology. Once the operator programs the slope, the machine does the rest on its own.
  • An engine control module (ECM; also called a powertrain control module, or PCM) that controls fuel mixture, ignition timing, variable cam timing, and emissions so the machine operates as efficiently as possible.

The attachment also has dual-reversible bolt-on cutting edges (BOCE) with wear indicators and patent-pending edge profile, rolled front and rear moldboards, replaceable side cutters and side plates, and a proportional valve. The two wheels in the front ensure stability whether moving forward or backward.
