Tolar Manufacturing Co. was recently selected by ND Construction Inc. to design and fabricate 41 custom-built transit shelters for the City of Santa Ana, Calif. The city obtained a grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to complete this project, which consists of four uniquely sized shelters that are fabricated into galvanized steel structures with aesthetically pleasing blue- and red-tinted polycarbonate roof panels and integrated benches. Decorative security lighting is provided by energy-saving, dusk-to-dawn, solar-powered LED illumination.
One unique feature is the use of papel picado (“pecked or perforated paper") wall treatments on many of the shelters to honor the city's heritage and culture. Papel picado is a Mexican folk art where decorative tissue paper is cut into elaborate designs in celebration of special occasions.
All 41 shelters are currently being installed through out the city.
