The American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) has announced the winners of its 2006 Excellence in Environmental Engineering Awards.

The organization presented its Superior Achievement recognition for the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site, a Superfund site 16 miles northwest of Denver. The project—a partnership between CH2M Hill and ICF Kaiser—involved closing a 385-acre industrial area by Dec. 15, 2006, so that cleanup efforts could commence; the efforts were completed 14 months ahead of schedule and more than $550 million under budget. Grand prize winners include:

  • Research: Carlsbad Seawater Desalination Demonstration Facility, Carlsbad, Calif.
  • Planning: Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant enhanced nutrient removal, Baltimore
  • Design: ASA Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility upgrade, Alexandria, Va.
  • Operations/Management: Antelope Valley Green Energy Program, Los Angeles
  • Small Projects: Triple Espresso of Oxygen: Super-Saturated Water Knocks Out Toluene Plume, Evart, Mich.
