DENVER, CO (Oct. 9, 2014) -- The Villages, Florida, District Board of Supervisors approved a nine-year renewal of its contract with CH2M HILL to provide complete operations and management of commercial and residential solid waste, recycle and yard waste collection, with an option for two additional five-year renewals.
“It’s exciting to see the client’s recognition of the long-term value we have provided for their solid waste needs at The Villages, and the trust in us to continue for at least the next nine years,” says Steve Meininger, CH2M HILL senior vice president and managing director, Operations Management Services group.
The partnership between The Villages and CH2M HILL goes back to 1993, when the planned community development about one hour north of Orlando was facing a growing population, environmental regulations, and increasing citizen expectations. Community leaders initially turned to CH2M HILL for operations and maintenance solutions for its water and wastewater utilities. Today the company provides complete O&M for nine water treatment plants, three wastewater treatment plants, collection and distribution systems, and meter reading.
In 2002, The Villages added sanitation services to CH2M HILL’s scope. The company now provides solid waste pickup two days a week and collects recycled material and yard waste one day a week.
Overall, the project has grown from serving a population of 5,000 with a staff of 13 to serving a population of more than 100,000 with a staff of more than 100. That growth shows no signs of slowing any time soon; earlier this year Forbes magazine ranked The Villages as the fastest-growing small city in the United States.
