Domenech, Hicks & Krockmalnic (DHK) was recognized by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) with its Project of the Year award in the Rail/Transit Transportation category for the New York Tri-State Metro Region. The award was presented at the DBIA's awards dinner at the Newark Club in Newark, N.J., and recognized the design and construction work DHK and other team members did for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Metro North Railroad (MNR), and the City of New York in creating the new Yankee Stadium Station in Bronx, N.Y.
The station will be part of the Metro-North commuter rail service, which is managed by the MTA. The four tracks of Metro-North's Hudson line pass west of the stadium, and as part of this project, the tracks are being located about 50 feet west to allow for construction of two center-island platforms. The award-winning design provides space for four 10-car trains to be loaded or unloaded at one time. Additionally, four staircases and two elevators will connect the platforms to a 10,000-square-foot covered mezzanine. From the mezzanine, a 450-foot-long, 25-foot wide overpass will lead to the stadium and the new parks being constructed on the waterfront. The overpass will be located north of 153rd Street.
The new station is expected to make Yankee Stadium one of the most transit-accessible stadiums in the country; it will enhance public transportation to the area and greatly reduce neighborhood traffic on game days. The railroad anticipates that approximately 10,000 people will use the station on game days, and up to 5,000 more will use the overpass to reach their cars in the area's west lot.
The groundbreaking for the project was July of 2007, and the new station is expected to open between April and June of 2009. The MTA estimates the total cost of the project to be $91 million.
Other team members on the station project included: CCA Civil and Halmar International (JV), Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure, CTS Group, SJH Engineering, P.C., Weidlinger Associates, Inc., and Creative Environment Solutions Corp.
The DBIA is a membership organization founded in 1993 to advocate and advance single source project delivery within the design and construction community. DBIA members include practitioners from all project phases, plus public and private sector project owners.
