TRIP, a nonprofit national transportation research group based in Washington, DC, released "Bumpy Road Ahead: America's Roughest Rides and Strategies to Make Our Roads Smoother," a report that examines the state of the nations urban roads, costs incurred by motorists as a result, and a ranking of large to mid-size urban areas with the worst road conditions.

Pavement condition data was gathered from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which collects annual reports from state departments of transportation.
