Members of the association have recycled an estimated 30 million tires into asphalt-rubber pavement since the 1990s. The process takes scrap tires from being an environmental liability, and turns them into valuable assets. Because the material is relatively cheap (about 12 cents/lb.) compared to asphalt (30 cents/lb.), adding 20% to the asphalt binder may help lower materials costs.
